What does "beadle" mean?

Could you please tell me ... What does "beadle" mean?
I´ve tried to find in the dictionary, but I couldn´t find it.

I´m reading Oliver Twist (the classic) and this word appears sometimes, for example in the following sentence:
"... when Mrs Mann, the good lady of the house, was unexpectedly startled by the apparition of Mr Bumble, the beadle, ..."

Thanks in advance,
Ritinha

I am reading the same book for school and had the same question. I think it means something like a strict church diciplinarian.

A "beadle" is a parish official.

(No doubt some are strict. No doubt some are not.)
