What does 'personalities' mean here?

Hi,

Could you tell me what it mean in this sentence:

This discussion has to do wholly with opinions, not with personalities.

Does it tend to mean persons, rather than characters?

My paraphrase is :

This discussion has to do wholly with opinions; it is not about attacking persons.

Any comments?

Thanks very much.

Hi I would say your paraphrase is quite right When having a discussion, you should tackle the opinions that are given, rather than making comments about the person who is giving a different view In UK football, there is a saying.. - You should play the ball, not the player Regards, Dave
