What does "period" mean in this sentence?

Hi ever one!

What does "period" mean in this sentence?

When "period" furniture became popular, American furniture factories attempted to duplicate various styles of French and English furniture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The answer is "reproduction of earlier style" according to book, but my question is why second alternative is not correct which is: "Furnitures that is made by hand". My reason is; we can understand the sentence like this:
"Period" furniture was a style of furnitures that became popular in French and England, and becasue of their population, Americans tries to duplicate them.

I think my rephrase is correct and we can understood from that, that period is some kind oh hand making furniture which became popular. What do you think?

Thanks beforehand.

Thnaks for your answer.

I don't mean "period" have such meaning as "handmade". Since it's a TOEFL question and "period" was a question that is not necessary to know the meaning, because you have to guess from the context. So I'm saying that if we have to guess the meaning; "handmade" is more likely to be guessed than "duplicate". Am I right? Do my rephrase is rational?

No, I cannot see that at all. There is no reason to guess that 'period' might mean 'handmade'. The text says--

When "period" furniture became popular, American furniture factories attempted

-- and factories, by definition, don't make handmade furniture.
