What does "off" mean in this case?

"Before you can get any sort of a shot off in tennis, you need to have your racquet in your hand, ready for play."

Thanks so much.

" 'Get a shot off' means 'complete a shot', or in this case 'complete hitting the tennis ball'. eg The tiger killed the hunter before he could get a shot off. It's a rather old-fashioned expression.
