What does "mixed success" mean?

I found the following sentence.

"Published in two volumes in 1949, this work immediately found both an eager audience and harsh critics."

So, can I say this work "had mixed success?"

How else can I use this expression?

Thanks.

Yes, that is a good use of the expression. Feel free to try again, Frances-- maybe you'll have mixed success at using the phrase.
