What does " many dollars ago"?

I saw this phrase in reader's digest May, 2011. Whole sentence is "One year and many dollars ago, I decided to move back to the house I grew up in."

I wonder the meaning of "many dollars ago" referring to "before spending much money"? I google it, but only get the book name and a political joke regarding American debt problem. Hope someone who knows what it means can explain it. Thanks!

I take it as measuring the elapsed period by two different standards: years passed, and dollars spent. Many years and many girlfriends ago I was a foolish young man.
