What does “just so you know” mean?

I have heard many people saying this

when they talk about something

and all of a sudden they say this before giving more information on the topic

The basic idea is that the speaker is telling you this information although it is not important that you should know it. However, the phrase is also sometimes used ironically, meaning that the information is important to you. The context usually makes the intended meanig clear.
