Hi Imagine you see a word on a plate for which only the initial ("A") is visible (scratched or something), and you have to figure out what word that is. So you ask yourself: "What could that 'a' stand for?" Now, I'd like to know: is the question correct, given the situation? I know for example that the question makes perfect sense in case of acronyms, where you also have the other initials (ex.: "a.k.a." "What does the 'a' stand for?" "For "also"). But in this case? Thank you.

Mmmh... actually I was looking for an expression underscoring the fact that we have an initial and we have to figure out the rest of the word. Something like: "Of what word might this be the initial?" Any opinions anybody?
