What does "it" refers to?

Hi! everyone.
Could you tell me what "it" refers to in the sentence below?
The death of birds, animals and human beings and people before us should not allow it to kill our desires to live, work, rest and enjoy ourselves.(I couldn't understand the purpose that "it" serves up there.)
I think the above sentence should have been simply written thus-:
We should not allow the death of birds, animals and human beings and people before us to kill our desires to live, work, rest and enjoy ourselves.
Thanks!

Yes, the original is badly structured and incorrect. Your version is much better. But say eg We should not allow the deaths of birds, animals and human beings to kill our desire to live, work, rest and enjoy ourselves.
