What does "it" refer to in this text?

Hi teachers!

This is from the book I study todays and I have no idera what "it" refers to in the fifth sentence.

"1. Uncertainty and freedom are itertwined. 2 College students cannot decide whether

they appreciate the freedom they have or resent it. 3 You may be free from daily supervision by parents, free to pick classes and a major, and free to set a professional course. 4 But those choices seem so numerous and important that you may be frozen with fear. 5 You might
quickly retreat to conventional choices (like medical school) or

depend on influential advisors (like your parenrs) before giving yourself a chance to figure it out. 6 Try not to confuse the joys and privilege of free choice with the fears of uncertainty. 7 It may be scary to look at an open landscape , but it can and should be a thrilling moment of possibility."

Many thanks ??
