What does it mean to offer a smile?

If someone tells you a joke, which you don't find funny at all, but you smile anyway just to not make the other person feel embarrassed. Would that be to offer a smile?

The word "offer" is a strong word with many strong connotations and would not used casually like this. You'd say instead, something like: "smiled anyway" or "forced a smile" or "smiled politely".
