What does it mean "randomly"

My first reaction is that that this sentence was written by someone who doesn't know what 'randomly' means. If I had to dig for a meaning, I'd guess that the idea is that students passed or failed, all for no apparent reason. Clive

For a while some years ago, teen slang included 'random' with the meaning 'unexpected' or 'unknown'. I don't know if this turn of phrase is still popular.
