What does it mean by 'let go of the key'

Hello,

I read an article about how to start a car. There are some words I don't quite understand.

"After the vehicle has started, let go of the key."

Is there anyone who can tell me the meaning of this sentence? Thank you.

I can only presume that you let go of the ignition key that you have been holding and turning in the ignition while starting the car.

Take your hand from/off the key.

Have you never kept your hand on the key and kept trying to turn it after the engine has engaged? It makes a horrible sound!
