If by "Isn't searching play," you mean "Isn't the author looking for the word "play" instead of "sport," the answer is no. "Play" in this sense means pretend:

"He isn't really angry; he's just play acting.

"Play hunting," which I've never heard, would mean not really hunting to kill. Sport hunters kill.

Sport hunting would be like seasonal deer hunting in the US, and big game hunting in Africa by foreigners. Indeed it might be looked at as "searching" for the animals as form of "play" for grown-up men.

Hunting may be a pastime, but no hunter would call it "play," if only because of the lethal weapons involved.

"sport hunting" is a valid term in English. It is impossible to say whether it is appropriate in your case without seeing the full context.

Sport hunting in the US is in a sense a competition because there are world records kept by various organizations.
