What does it mean?

I don't understand why "why not" there. Could you explain, please?

I’ve been going through a rough patch recently and every time I think it can’t get worse, it does. Today was one of those days. I drove to Barnes and Noble and thought since I don’t have anyone to go to why not get a notebook to write all this down in. I really had never felt so alone.

When there’s a choice between doing something and not doing it, a person weighs the advantages of each. If there isn’t a big disadvantage in buying a notebook, why not do so?
