What does "it got well into the minuses" mean?

Context:

I can honestly say that I have never, ever, experienced cold feet or hands.
The better half, on the other hand (scuse pun), can have freezing cold hands during a heatwave.

If it was up to me, I'd never put the heating on in the house....well, maybe if it got well into the minuses, but I have to, otherwise the dog, cat and better half would never let up until I did.
