What does 'instinct for fear' mean?

Horses have a well-developed instinct for fear.

Top answer

The phrase "instinct for fear" does not seem right to me. If you have an instinct for something, it means you are naturally good at it, or have an intuitive understanding of it, or something like that. You cannot be "naturally good at fear", and I doubt that it means horses have an intuitive understanding of fear.
