What does "if a day" mean in the below sentence and how to use it? Thanks!

"Even with a modest daily intake of Mr. Gosling's elixir, called by the natives black rum, he had somehow gotten his six-foot-plus frame down to his fighting weight of 180. He now had a deep tan and a flat belly, and he felt just fine. In his early thirties, he felt twenty if a day."

It's intended to mean that he certainly felt 20 years old rather than 30 years old, but the idiom is rather misused here. ' If number + unit' should represent a hyperbolic minimum, but feeling 'a day' old is hardly appropriate.
