What does "I came across~" mean?

Hi.

Now, I'm trying to interpret some test as the below.

=>"But before that I think I came across quite professional but you could still tell they were thinking in the back of their heads, 'I've got a kid sitting in front of me.'"

1. in here, I can't get it exactly the meaning," I think I came across quite professional" especially "came across".

2. I can't get it exactly the meaning, "but you could still tell they were thinking in the back of their head", especially, how is telling this "you at the above sentence"?

I can't get it "you could still tell" exactly. tell who?

In my variety of English this would contain 'as':

I came across as quite professional.
