What does "grow on" mean here?

This excerpt is from the Shinning.

"You set me up an even twenty martinis. An even twenty, just like that, kazang. One for every month I've been on the wagon and one to grow on. You can do that, can't you? You aren't too busy?"

Would you tell me what "grow on" mean here?

Thank you.

It's a saying, probably in American, not British English. It was used on children's birthdays. Children got one candle on the birthday cake for each year and an extra one to help them grow up.
