What does "gained 21 letters" mean? "Recognised another 21 letters (in eye chart, it means vision got improved)"?

Context:

Despite undergoing retinal detachment, which normally reduces vision, two patients with advanced choroideremia who had low baseline best corrected visual acuity gained 21 letters and 11 letters (more than two and four lines of vision).

Thanks. But you haven't answered my question - the letter thing or the relationship between letters and lines in sight chart.

The standard eye chart has lines of letters. The letters decrease in size line by line. You could google the standard UK eye chart to find out how many letters are on each line. I am not in the UK, so am not familiar with their standards.
