Hi, Never heard of this idiom before, but I am pretty sure it means 'don't give it all away for nothing'. Supposedly, I guess, because by showing Chandler her cleavage, Phoebe would lose all of her leverage while getting no information in return. - DJB -

Hi

I think the more usual idioms are 'Don't sell the farm' or 'Don't bet the farm'. It means, don't give up assets which are reliable in order to trade in something that is risky

Yes, I think that's good. I'm no expert on marketing but I gather you are saying that, in running a business, you should use most of your resources to supply a good quality product at a fair price; and you should allocate only a small part of your budget for gimmicky, loss-leader products. Sounds good to me

My 100 year-old grandma would have said, "this means the "Jersey Cows" (*****!) I would say that it has to do with giving in general. We are supposed to give 10% away, save 10%, and live on 80%. I
I think what's meant is that it's not necessary to give it all away. You need to keep some to live on but you have to also live generously (my additional thought)

I think 'Don't sell the farm' means don't give away cheaply what people should be charged for at some cost. ie don't give away photos of yourself for nothing. Don't give your body away for nothing. Get married first. In the Friends version it might mean don't get pregnant.
