What does "face bond" mean?

Context:

Some Atlanta school cheating suspects face $1M bond

ATLANTA — Educators accused in a massive cheating scandal at the city's public schools began turning themselves in at Fulton County Jail on Tuesday, with some lawyers complaining about the high bonds their clients face.
The 35 defendants were indicted Friday on 65 counts, including racketeering, making false statements and improperly influencing witnesses.

I fail to understand "forfeited by the bondsman." The bondsman offers the money to the court. So when the accused person fails to appear in court, the court will forfeit the money (bond). So "forfeited by the bondsm
