What does "evolve into each other" means?

What does "evolve into each other" means?
An ancient Earth was a necessary part of Darwin's vision of evolution, which required vast stretches of time for species to evolve into each other.

Doesn't sound right. I would understand if someone said "evolve into something" but "evolve into each other" don't sound right. Does he mean one evolve into the other and the other evolve into the one?

Top answer

It indeed does not sound right; the sentence is particularly infelicitous. He means that 'vast stretches of time are required for species to evolve into other species. '
