What does "emperors who descended from many different dynasties" mean?

We now know that emperors were common people who rose to throne. Descended from dynasties? They either overthrew the former dynasty and established a new one or inherited their forebear's. Descended? I fail to understand the description.

Context:

After visiting the Beijing Normal School, Madame Peng took Sasha and Malia, my mother, and me to the Forbidden City, which is located right in the heart of Beijing.
For more than 2,000 years (up until 1912), China was ruled by emperors who descended from many different dynasties, or families, who passed ruling positions on from generation to generation – and for nearly 500 years, the Forbidden City served as the emperor’s home.
Like the name suggests, the Forbidden City is large enough to be a city of its own – it includes nearly 1,000 buildings and nearly 10,000 rooms.

NL888 What does "emperors who descended from many different dynasties" mean? I suggest that it means what it says—a long, long series of emperors, with different dynastic families in ascendence during that period— but perhaps Michelle Obama did not have a clear picture of Chinese history.

An emperor is the ruler of an empire. I don't think they are most often common people who rose to a throne, though that may have happened sometime in history. Often they were of royal or noble birth, or were direct descendants of emperors.

In the sentence you mentioned, they are described as having bloodlines leading back to multiple dynasties, which is totally possible. Keep in mind that
