What does "dry wash" mean?

Hello.

Can anyone please tell me what is a dry wash? under this context "And then he turned and ran, ran frantically down the dry wash which drianed away from the prairie-dog colony."

And also what does "drain away" here mean?

A wash is a lower area in dry country where water runs off the land when it rains (it is like a stream when it rains). A dry wash has no water in it. 'Drain away' = flow away. The rainwater runs in that direction away from the higher dry country.
