Hello.Can anyone please tell me what is a dry wash? under this context "And then he turned and ran, ran frantically down the dry wash which drianed away from the prairie-dog colony."And also what does "drain away" here mean?Thank you

The ground sloped away from the colony. So when there was water in the stream, it flowed away from the colony.

A wash is a lower area in dry country where water runs off the land when it rains (it is like a stream when it rains).  A dry wash has no water in it.  'Drain away' = flow away.  The rainwater runs in that direction away from the higher dry country.
