What does ‘communicate the virus’ mean?

I frowned upon reading the following statement:

Those men who have recovered from the Ebola virus disease can still communicate the virus through their semen for up to 49 days after their recovery.

I wonder: What does the writer mean by communicate the virus? Could it be a medical term or expression? (Isn’t it that there’s the medical expression communicable disease?) Another thing: What did she write for up to 49 days, not for 49 days (which sounds more grammatical)?
