What does "branded him not fit " mean?

Hi, can anyone explain the meaning of "branded him not fit for mainstream audiences" to me?

I am having some difficulty understanding the following paragraph:

The very elements that once branded him not fit for mainstream audiences now seem enlightened and fresh, raising disturbing questions that force us to think about the implications of modern life; they now seem hyper-real rather than merely goofy.

I found that it can mean something like denounce or stigmatize, but that doesn't make sense to me at all
Many thanksss! Emotion: smile
