What does below sentence mean?

I can't answer that, I know Mary can. I will defer to her until she gets back.

I'm not sure it makes proper sense. "defer to her" apparently means allow her to answer in recognition of the fact that she knows more about the matter. However, I don't see why you would do this only "until she gets back".
