what does "be thankful" means here ?

my friend received a Christmas present last year from her boyfriend

and with that present there was a letter that says:

"this is a Christmas present for you, take it and be thankful"

they are still boyfriend and girlfriend but i want to know what does

"be thankful" means here

If my boyfriend sent that to me, I would return the gift and the letter with the note: I have many things in life that I am thankful for, and you are not among them.
