What does along mean here?

The humblest hello-girl along ten thousand miles of wire
could teach gentleness, patience, modesty, manners, to the
highest duchess in Arthur's land.

Does he mean "over the length of"? I find it unusual because the verb "teach" does not imply any kind of movement.

Hi,

I've never heard that term. Is it used in some particular country, like India?

What do they call a male? A hello-boy?
