What does "alone" mean in the sentence?

Hi,

I am reading an article about dangerous univerisities by Mark Mercer.

In one of the paragraphs, he said," ...a dangerous univeristy is about investigation and criticism, about constructing from evidence and argument alone a view of the world...."

If the "alone" is an adverb, which verb or adjective is it modifying?

Is alone here an adverb or an adjective? Is it same meaning as "let me alone" which means stop bothering?

Thanks
