what does across mean here, according to the following link?! which definition is correct?!

I think the definition "1b" is correct. I think that mean in another room.
I am not sure I am right.

That makes sense, but it has nothing to do with being in another room.

Unless it's "on the other side of" the partition that separates rooms — the likely misinterpretation that got us here, so to speak.
