What do you mean vs what did you mean

I am giving two sentences below.Please tell me when(which situation) to use these sentences? When we search any word in google search box and if the spelling is an error, then google says, "did you mean.....".This is the context.

These are essentially the same. The second uses "the past of politeness" so it sounds more polite.
