What do you call these? - with pictures

Hi,
could someone tell me what do you call this kind of footwear in the US?

And another question... is there a difference between a sweatsuit and a tracksuit? I think they are the same...

Thanks Emotion: smile

Ah, thanks. So both are called "sandals"... Yeah, Birkenstock are used here too, but I don't know if people call them Birkenstock. I say the usual dialectal word for everything that you wear at home (sandals, slippers, etc.)

2. Flip-flops

Thank you...
But Clive calls #2 sandals too, and Jim call them flip-flops... Is it a difference between Canadian English and US English, or is it just a matter of preference?
Thanx

Hi,

I think of flip-flops as the kind of sandal where the main part of the strap goes between your big toe and the toe next to it.Because these shoes are held on much less securely, they 'flop' on your foo as you walk, and are sometimes even said to make a sound as you walk like 'flip flop'.

You'll find some pictures here.

Well, in women's shoes, they're called "slides."

I don't know if men's shoes are called that too.

Also, just "beach shoes" or "shower shoes" when they're made of rubber like the ones shown.

I note this site mentions the term 'thong' as an alternative name for a flip-flop.

This term is now also used for other women's wear, so learners might want to be

Thank you all...
CliveThis term is now also used for other women's wear, so learners might want to be careful to avoid saying things in the singular, eg My thong is too tight, look at this blister it has given me.
