What do you call a former mayor?

When writing an article, how should the writer refer to a former mayor? The former mayor now holds a position with a local business. The article is not about him, it is about a charitable contribution made to the business he now works for, but he was involved in the acquisition of an art piece made possible by the contribution.

I would use what you have already suggested: "Former mayor John Smith has helped in the acquisition of..."
