What do we usually say when calling somoene back?

Dear All,

If someone gives a call but you are unable to answer or you simply didn't notice that someone was calling, what would be the best line to use when calling this person back? Could I ask for a few alternatives?

Thanks!

Thanks. But what if we have no idea who the caller is/was? If the number we get a call from is unknown to us?

It still works.

Hmm... and what would you say afterwards? I suppose "may I know who you are?" doesn't sound good...

It sounds fine if you are sure that you don't recognize the voice or the number. If it is your wife's mother, then you will have an embarrassing moment.

May I know who you are? This is not a very natural question.
More commonly is
eg Who's speaking, please?
eg Who is this, please?

I'd like to suggest that if you see a random number on your phone log and there is no voicemail from that person, you have absolutely NO requirement to call that number to find out who they were and what they wanted.

You don't need to say anything, because you don't need to call them in the first place.

I do... because yesterday I was at a job fair and left my number to a few people...
