What do "tainted" and "synthetic" mean here?

But since this is Jerusalem, property of all, only their image is the right one; the tainted, synthetic reality must be changed; everyone has the right to impose their ‘Jerusalem’ on Jerusalem – and, with sword and fire, they often have.

Hi. I think "tainted" means "flawed" and "synthetic" means "not genuine" here and the underlined part means "people's stereotype about what Jerusalem is like must be changed".
Am I right?

i think it means just the opposite. The "reality" they see is not actually true, and the city must be changed to match their image of it.
