What do "pet vanity" and the sentence mean?

Could you explain what the meaning of the sentence below? What do the words in bold mean?

"Like many other simple-hearted souls, it was her pet vanity to believe she was endowed with a talent for dark and mysterious diplomacy, and she loved to contemplate her most transparent devices as marvels of low cunning."

It was her believe that she could greatly deceive people with trechereous questions. She loved to think most cunning questions of her type but these weren't actually really deceitful
