What did you have?

Hi teachers,

I'd like to know if the sentence is natural.

What did you have for fruit?

Thanks

Yes. It sounds like the speaker is thinking of fruit as a stage in a meal, and has an expectation that you should have eaten some fruit. Clive

Hi Clive,

Can you say 'What did you have for fruit/ fruits today?' to mean 'What kind of fruit you ate today?' So she would tell me I had some apple, orange, and maybe cantalop in school today.

Thanks

The natural thing is to ask 'What kind of fruit did you eat/have today?'

Hi Clive,

Thanks for correcting it.

Can I say, 'What are we going to do for fruit for tonight's party?' to mean 'our fruit ran out and the store is closed'?

Can I say, 'What are we going to do for fruit for tonight's party?' Yes

to mean 'our fruit ran out and the store is closed'? If the listener already understands that context, yes.
