What date is today?

As the title shows, do native english speakers use "What date is today"?

My chinese ESL teacher said it was ok, but some people on the Internet said it was not right.

So I'm a little confused now.

It seems to me that I've heard this, yes. Nevertheless, I'd say "What's today's date?" or "What date is it today?"
