What branch of phonetics is it?

The branch of phonetics studying the way phonetic units function in the language is

theoretical phonetics or functional phonetics(phonology)?

The three main kinds of phonetics are: Articulatory - the study of how sounds are made; Acoustic - the study of speech as we hear it; Experimental - the study of identifying which aspects of sound are necessary for understanding.
