"what" as the subject...

Can you please see if I'm using "what" correctly? (It doens't sound very good to my ears)

Habits are routines. That's what makes habits interesting.
I like to use what as the subject to replace "the thing, the concept that" makes them interesting. (I'd like to use that,what, which rather than other nouns)
