What as relative pronoun

Hello.
In these examples what's the grammatical function of what? I know that in some sentences can be a relative pronoun, but the definition shows that it has the meaning of the thing that. Well, it seems that this definition doesn't fit well in some of these examples, isn't it? If not, what other function can take what?

Do you understand what to do?
What he said didn't please us.
You should have told me what was the film about.
No matter what he does, they will not accept him in the group.
What helps me to succeed is working hard.
Are they doing what they want to do?
