What are your thoughts on apparently overused phrases

Writing teachers often suggest to avoid long-winded, overused phrases that have no real meaning...

Sometimes I feel words that are deemed useless and that should be avoided at all costs sound good and add to a sentence. Each of the words below can either be omitted altogether or shortened.

Example of words:
The fact of the matter is
That being said
In my opinion
I am writing to (tell you)...

What are your thoughts on this? Do you consider using the words that writing teachers forbid the use of and then remove them because you have been taught to?

Obviously most of these types of phrases are not ideal for a lot formal contexts.

If you want to write well, you will never use a turn of phrase that sounds familiar to you.

OK, how's this: Avoid cliches like the plague.

But aren't they cliches for a reason? That is, they are used frequently because they are useful, popular phrases.

I guess
