What are you doing well in?

My friend and I are arguing over the preposition of this sentence. I say it makes sense without it so there is no need for it to be there. He said that he wants it to be answered to be "I am doing well in . . . " with the answer being a school subject, so it should be there. Can someone please clarify this? Thank you.
