What are the good alternatives to using word "so".

As a non-native speaker of English I tend to, at least I feel that I do, to over-use a word "so".

I often use it to start a sentence, and, even more often, to combine a multiple statements within a sentence.

Can you give me some grammar/vocabulary tips how can I avoid this?

Thank you.

It is not a grammar/vocabulary problem; it is simply a bad habit that some speakers, both native and non-native acquire. It is used as a pause while the speaker thinks of his next utterance. It is a difficult habit to break.
