What are the alternatives for "alleviate" or "mitigate"?

While I was writing an essay about that though people in the past have good relationship with their neighbours, we cannot find such trends in the contemporary society. Indeed this is not a such a serious issue when we compare it with climate change or some bigger issues. Furthermore, I think words such as "alleviate" and "mitigate" could be only used for some serious issues. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what are the other options available to talk about reducing impact of such less serious issues.
