What are some useful IELTS sample tests to prepare for the exam?

I recently took the IELTS Academic exam on October 10, 2020, and achieved an overall band score of 8.0, with Listening 9.0, Reading 8.5, Writing 6.5, and Speaking 7.0. For my preparation, I focused on the Listening and Reading sections by practicing timed mock tests daily for about a month using the Cambridge IELTS books, which are available on Amazon.

For the Writing section, I found the website IELTSJacky to be an excellent resource. Additionally, IELTSLiz's website and YouTube channel offer fantastic tips and strategies—be sure to check out all her videos!

As for the Speaking section, I didn’t prepare extensively; I primarily reviewed the material in the Cambridge IELTS book. However, I recommend daily practice to build your confidence.

Here are some tips to help you achieve a high score:

  1. Daily Practice: Take one Listening and one Reading test from the Cambridge IELTS book every day. You might also consider using Barron's IELTS book for additional practice.
  2. Writing Practice: Focus on Writing Task 1 and Task 2 a few times a week, rather than every day.
  3. Speaking Preparation: For Part 2 of the Speaking test, practice the most common topics. In Part 1, you’ll typically answer basic questions about yourself, so you should feel comfortable there. Part 3 will involve a discussion with the examiner related to the topic from Part 2.

Important Reminders:

  • Avoid memorizing answers; aim to be natural in your responses.
  • Remember, the IELTS assesses your language skills, not your knowledge. If you encounter a topic you're unfamiliar with, don’t be intimidated—just respond as best you can.
  • Check out the E2 Learning YouTube channel for their PPF method, which can be particularly helpful for Part 2 of the Speaking test. Make sure to watch that video!
