What and why/ something else again

Of the five children of Julius and Catherine Witte, Sergei was the only one who distinguished hirnself. Why Sergei stood out among them is a matter of fruitless speculation, but the what and why of his spectacular career are something else again.

Could you please intepret the bolded in your own words-I understand the words but can't get a cohesive meaning? Is what and why a fixed expression here? Thanks a lot.

Vladv Is what and why a fixed expression here? Not to my mind. He just means "the details" by "the what and why".
